The View Upstairs

New Conservatory Theatre Center, San Francisco CA, May 2019

As a native Louisianan who has spent lots of time in the gay bars of New Orleans, few projects I've worked on meant as much to me personally as The View Upstairs. A fictional story based on an actual event in the French Quarter in the 1970s, the musical features the patrons of gay bar The Upstairs Lounge on its final night of existence before it was set on fire by an unknown arsonist, killing many of the people inside. Each character had a street clothes look for the duration of the musical, and then a special finale look that they appeared in for a total of about two minutes. The feature costume was for the drag performer character who "'throws together" the outfit from things available in the bar, including a curtain, mardi gras beads, feather boas, and lots of duct tape, taking me right back to my own drag days.
