Mondrian Robe

March, 2018

When singer/songwriter Aish Shukla came to me with a commission to promote his new album Mother, he knew he wanted a garment inspired by the De Stijl modern art movement, with a lot of structure to it. We combed the internet for inspirational images, and I created a design for a robe with pants, a tabard, and a headpiece. We ended up nixing the pants and headpiece and focused on just the robe and tabard, creating a stunning ensemble for a live performance of new music from his album. I used heavy satin and cotton broadcloth for the shell, with black bias tape for all the outlines. In the interest of time I hired a stitcher to do a lot of the assembly for me while I cut detail pieces.
