Mathilde Wedding Dress and Jumpsuit

November 2019

Mathilde Froustey, Principal dancer for SF Ballet, asked me to design and build her wedding dress. She wanted something sexy yet elegant, chic but playful, simple but eye-catching. The design we settled on was a long A-line silhouette with a plunging neckline. It was executed in traditional materials including beaded net, lace, and crinoline, but in a daring way. The skirt, being a single layer of beaded net over translucent nylon crinoline, was just sheer enough for the light to shine through, but hand-appliqued floral motifs were strategically placed all over the torso to obscure any underlying detail. The piece de resistance was the veil, a simple piece of ultra-fine silk chiffon tacked to a clear elastic band that she held tight against her head with her hand. When she arrived at the altar, she released the invisible band and her attendants simply lifted the veil off of her in a full reveal that didn't muss a single strand of her elegant coiffure. She also had me make a jumpsuit in a plunging neckline style very similar to the dress, but made of a stretchy white sequined net of interesting geometric shapes.
