Madness In Valencia

Sacred Fools Theatre, Los Angeles CA, May 2009

This Rennaisance-era comedy set in and around a famous lunatic asylum in Valencia, Spain shows that the line between love and insanity is a fine one, indeed. The director and I decided on a full Spanish Renaissance silhouette to give a truly period feel, but interpreted with modern fabrics and whimsical details to emphasize the plot’s lunacy. There wasn’t enough space for wired hoopskirts on and around the stage, and two of the women engaged in a knock-down-drag-out-cat-fight anyway, so I chose an earlier, cheaper method of stiffening the farthingales with rope, which I was able to turn in to a major design element in Fedra’s costume.
