A somewhat lesser-known musical, this particular version was based on a rewrite that features the main character as a gay man instead of a straight woman, who falls in love with his therapist while experiencing past-life regressions as a female jazz singer. The timeline is split into 1973 and 1943, which was my first time to costume the post-war decade, and a fun opportunity. My color concept worked on two main levels. The overall scheme was that the flashbacks were all done in grayscale like an old movie, and the present day scenes in the 70s were all in warm 70s fall tones. On top of that framework, the three main characters each had a color evolution. Mark, Melinda, and David all start out neutral beige, gray, and brown respectively, but they all take on elements of color--blue, orange, and green-- as they fall in love until they are fully colored.  Blue and orange are derived from the colors of the sky at different times of day, and green derives from David's love of plants. As the characters' stories entwine, they start to show elements of each other's colors as well until they finally settle back into themselves at the end, carrying small accents of the other colors as memories.
