For my friend's first birthday in San Francisco, he wanted to channel his latine roots with a Carmen Miranda-inspired clubbing outfit (he's half-Mexican, and not even a bit Brazilian). On a gold leotard base is a sleeve unit of neon pink and green leopard print lycra, with a removable shoulder ruffle harness. The tulle accessory can be worn at the hips as a skirt bustle, at the neck as a cape with a collar, attached to the headpiece as a veil. The fruit hat itself is a hand-me-down from a local drag queen and was falling apart, so it had to be completely rebuilt and enhanced. The finishing touches were provided by a bright print silk shawl he had that we used to cover the hat base and a matching fan, then we used the leftover as a sarong.
